THE HERO DC DESERVES & THE HERO IT NEEDS RIGHT NOW

Since Warner Bro's was taken over by Discovery, there hasn't been a lot for DC fans to cheer about. With high profile TV and movie cancellations, such as 'Bat Girl', alongside the consistent tirade of cost cutting by CEO David Zaslav. No project has been safe!

SAVING A SINKING SHIP?

However with the close of 2022 came the news that James Gunn and Peter Safran had been hired to save the sinking DC ship. Since the outlook has been significantly brighter. To this point the DCEU had been.. well inconsistent. Flawed characterisation, thematic inconsistencies and a list of hired and fired directors longer than Star Wars. It had become a mess.

However all of a sudden the future of the DC cinematic universe is starting to look a lot more exciting! With the Guardians of the Galaxy director is bringing his signature style to the DC slate, and we couldn't be more excited.

Gunn has already given us a taste of what's to come with his The Suicide Squad movie, along with Peacemaker show on HBO Max. The Suicide Squad boasted a killer cast and a/his twisted sense of humour, it was a breath of fresh air. But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

THE FLASHPOINT

We at Podcast Assemble have speculated for some time that the upcoming The Flash movie could be the gateway to reset the cinematic DCEU; initial teasers appeared to indicate that the movie would be (at least loosely) based on the Flashpoint comic series. In which Reverse-Flash reveals that Flash himself created the Flashpoint timeline by traveling back in time to stop him from killing Barry's mother. Culminating in a reboot event which ended the continuity of 'New Earth' - and as the movie is one of the few which is going ahead, we're eager to see what that means for Gunn's vision. The possibilities are endless, and we're ready for a fresh take on these iconic characters.

WHAT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED?

Movies:

  • Superman: Legacy (for which Gunn is currently writing the screenplay)

  • The Authority (the Authority explores antiheroes who have good intentions)

  • The Brave and the Bold (a Batman and Robin story including Bruce’s son Damian)

  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (to be based on Tom King’s recent DC run)

  • Swamp Thing

TV:

  • Creature Commandos (an animated series, for which Gunn has already written seven episodes for the series)

  • Waller (the Amanda Waller spinoff series is moving forward with Viola Davis still set reprise the role)

  • Lanterns (described as True Detective in space!)

  • Paradise Lost (a series in the style of Game of Thrones, focusing on the origin of Themyscira before Wonder Woman's time)

  • Booster Gold (a fan favourite, the series follows a superhero with imposter syndrome from the future, using advanced tech)

Titled Gods & Monsters the first (I guess) Phase of the Gunn and Safran's universe has a lot to get excited about, shuffled in with some weird stuff too.

THE SNYDER (VISION) CUT

Personally I'm most excited for a true Superman adaptation; focusing on what makes the character great, which is long overdue. Man of Steel certainly attempted something new, though Zack Synder's vision was not perfect, I liked it on the whole. However I felt it didn't capture the true essence of Big Blue. Gunn appears to be taking inspiration from the All-Star Superman run and the movie will focus on The Man of Steel balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. We're eager to see what Gunn can do with the character. (Even if we're a little sad it won't be Henry Cavill wearing the cape..)

But perhaps the most intriguing project on the DC slate is the Green Lantern series - touted as True Detective with space cops. The show will focus on two of the lanterns: Hal Jordan and John Stewart and leads into the overall story being told telling. The creator is either giving himself a LOT to do, or could be creating the exciting and ambitious superhero TV show ever created.

Overall, we're thrilled to see DC stepping up its game and giving the MCU a run for its money. With James Gunn at the helm, we know we're in good hands. So bring on the superhero madness, we're ready for it!
