The New Shazam 2 Teaser Spoils a Major DCU Cameo.. If you weren't totally sold on the hierarchy of Warner Bro’s having no skin in the game for any of the final and upcoming DCEU movies, just check out the new teaser for Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The trailer goes ahead and spoils the appearance of a major DC Universe hero.
If you don’t want any spoilers going into the movie, look away now…
The new promo ironically trills that it will be “full of surprises" before ruining the main.. well, surprise and outright showing the cameo of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. Great job guys! This got us thinking however - this isn’t the first time that trailers have given away major plot beats. So we decided to look at a few of our favourites from movie history, if we can call it that.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Starting with a DCEU entry to ease you in to this one: BVS opens in the aftermath of Superman's destructive battle with General Zod in Man of Steel, leading Bruce Wayne to embark on a personal vendetta against the big blue Boy Scout. Fans were truly intrigued to know how the proposed villain of the piece, Jessie Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, would use this anger to manipulate the Batman into engaging in a brutal and intense showdown.
However we weren’t able to revel in our fan theories and internet rabbit holes, as in what was not even the final trailer, we had it revealed that the true foe of the piece to be Doomsday. Going a step further to show off that we would get a big team including the trinity of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman all fighting together - the trailers basically gave away the entire plot..
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
One of my favourite all time movies, T2 was the follow-up to the genre defining 1984 classic The Terminator and pitted Sarah Connor and her son John against a new more terrifying foe - the T-1000. Sent back in time to eliminate them and prevent the rise of the future resistance leader, the T-1000 presented a new more extreme threat, while a reprogrammed T-800 had simultaneously been sent to protect the hero’s!
Now I was waaay too young to have watched this movie at the time, but age limits be dammed! The trailer however gave away the huge reveal for Arnold’s character! Having been the villain in the first film, his hero turn being spoiled meant that we were deprived of what could have been one of the most captivating U-turns in cinema history.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
One from the Marvel Side of the fence now, The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) was set to reinvigorate the franchise with a new Peter Parker at the helm, and a new more edgy direction. The movie follows “high school student” (HUGE quotation marks..) Peter Parker, who gains spider-like abilities after being bitten by a genetically modified spider. As he embraces his new powers, he must also confront his father's past with the dangerous Oscorp Industries, while balancing his responsibilities as Spider-Man, with his love for girlfriend Gwen Stacy and school. Basically a standard Spider-Man story. (Emphasis on MAN)
However, the various online leaks from the movie were in no way as egregious as the trailer. Which literally showed the climactic scene where Peter Parker saves Gwen Stacy, revealing that she survives the film. Sony are good at movies.
Psycho (1960)
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho was and is truly innovative piece of cinema. It is a masterpiece of suspense and psychological horror, known for its iconic shower scene and groundbreaking narrative twists. Not to mention famously being known for having the first toilet flush in cinema history - go check it out if you don’t believe me.
Psycho follows Lila Crane a private investigator, trying to uncover the truth behind her sister’s disappearance which she believes is connected to the secrets hidden within the Bates Motel - leading to a shocking and unforgettable climax. Or at least it would have been if the trailer hadn’t presented viewers with direct scenes from the film that gave away the twist ending, in which Norman Bates is revealed to be the killer. You could say the studio was the vibe killer.
X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
Fox’s X-Men franchise, along with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, in many ways reinvented the comic book movie genre. Re-introducing the concept for a new audience and making them… cool. (There I said it). However the X-Men movies were in no way perfect: riddled with inconsistencies and a timeline more confusing than why Chris Nolan doesn't edit the sound in his movies, by the time Disney acquired the rights the films were pretty much incoherent.
Days of Future Past was however one of the better entries in the franchise and followed the X-Men of the future, who send Wolverine back in time to prevent a catastrophic event that will lead to the extinction of both mutants and humans. He must work with the younger versions of Professor X and Magneto to stop Mystique from assassinating the creator of the Sentinel program and change the course of history.
I mentioned the confusing timeline right? Good. The franchise had previously established that Professor Xavier (Patrick Stewart) of the future was in-fact dead, having been disintegrated by Jean Grey in X-Men: The Last Stand. However the trailer for Days of Future Past revealed that the character was somehow actually alive and was to play a major role in the plot. No wonder Logan looked so confused the whole time.
Which movie was spoiled for you by the trailer giving a little too much away?
