Paul Rudd's Scott Lang is the underdog of the Avengers. He doesn't have billionaire tech or super-soldier serum on his side, just a suit that makes him shrink really really small.. and sometimes grow. But he's got heart, and Marvel has been milking that for all it's worth in the Phase 4. Now he's back for his third solo outing in Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania, and if the trailer is any indication, Scott Lang might be in serious trouble.
WHO IS KANG?
The new big bad Marvel is building towards is Kang the Conqueror and this is his opening night. In the comics Kang is a time-traveling multi-verse level threat who makes Thanos look like a warm-up act. He's played by Jonathan Majors, who has the kind of charm that makes you want to follow him even when he's monologuing about conquering the timestream. He's got Scott outmatched in every way, and the trailer doesn't even pretend otherwise. We see Kang literally slapping Ant-Man around like a rag doll, and Scott looks like he'd rather be anywhere else.
But does Scotty have a plan? It seems so. The trailers hint that he wants to use Kang's time-hopping abilities to undo the five years he missed with his daughter, Cassie (Kathryn Newton). But what could go wrong I hear you cry? Everything, apparently. Marvel wants us to believe that Scott's going to die, and they're not exactly subtle about it. The trailer ends with him surrounded by other versions of himself, saying "I'm sorry, Cassie" like he's about to buy the farm.
IS ANT-MAN THE FIRST OF MANY?
If Ant-Man really does bite the dust, it would be a major shock to the system. Scott is the kind of character who's supposed to make us believe that anyone can be a hero, no matter how small. Killing him off would be like killing off a puppy, or a rainbow, or a warm hug. But it would also make Kang look like the real deal, the kind of villain who takes out fan favorites just to prove a point. Marvel wants us to think that Kang is the next Thanos, and if he can kill Ant-Man, he might just earn that title. Furthermore, with James Gunn's third and final Guardians of the Galaxy movie looking certain to clean house, could Scott Lang's fate be a glance into the MCU's future?
KANG IS THE REAL DEAL
It's difficult to say whether Marvel really will kill Ant-Man, of course. But given the hints and clues in the trailer, as well as Marvel's focus on younger characters, our theory is that at the end of the movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Scott Lang will definitively meet his end. This would have major implications for the future of the MCU, and would establish Kang as a force to be reckoned with from the get-go. Whether this theory turns out to be true or not, fans will no doubt be on the edge of their seats when the film finally hits theatres in February 2023.
